Bloom House - Contemporary Family Garden

Client's brief

Having completed a full refurbishment of their home, the clients were keen to tackle the large and impractical exterior space.

They presented a wish-list: swimming pool, pool house, dining area, lounge area, outdoor kitchen, planting for a floristry business and space for basketball, football and table tennis. All without losing the open views to the surrounding countryside.

But how to achieve it?

"For every design I focus on the key feature that drives other design lines. For this project it is the swimming pool. Placing it centrally makes it the hub of the garden and yet its ground level profile allows for uninterrupted views.  To provide for the other activities on the wish-list the overall space is sub-divided. The 'divisions' are either see-through, low level or implied by a change of materials.

The styling reflects the relaxed contemporary vibe of the interior by using a restricted palette of materials and accessories in soft greys and fawn with white as an accent.

The planting scheme is a curated mix of long-season plants with bulbs and perennials providing highlights, anchored by a supporting cast of hardworking evergreens.

All of the features, apart from the beautiful, large white planters and the furniture, are bespoke crafted elements requiring many hours of additional design detail input and collaboration with other professionals. Working with the right 'team' is critical to the success of any project."

For this project Karen has been awarded the title 'Designer of the Year- 2020'  at the APL National Awards.

Client's Review

We found Karen on-line and from our first meeting we knew that we wanted to work with her. She understood what we were trying to achieve, how we would use the area and then came up with a concept plan which hadn’t even crossed our minds. Karen’s technical drawings were incredibly detailed. Everything ‘works’ perfectly and we are entertaining friends and family weekly as everybody wants to come to ours! The planting design continues to amaze us. I have developed a love of the garden and especially enjoy quiet times at home completing tasks set for me by our gardener. Karen has enhanced our lives.
