Garden design one-day courses
At Cressing Temple Barns, Braintree.
With almost 20 years experience in designing gardens of all shapes and sizes there’s one design ‘tool’ that I regularly call upon to support the initial process of co-ordinating a  garden layout.  It is a ‘timeless template’ used by professionals to inspire both traditional and contemporary designs whether working on a complete redesign or just one area of a garden.

What to expect from the garden design course
During our time together we’ll explore how this template can help you make considered changes to your own garden. The course is particularly ideal for those wanting to learn how to create the layout for a new vegetable/ herb or cutting garden; how to make a boring lawn more interesting or to create a new garden ‘room’. However, if all you want to do is bring a little order to a chaotic space or even just gain an introduction to garden design this day is for you! (Please note: the focus of this course is on layout design and not planting or general horticulture)
The unique feature of this course is that we will spend some time in the beautiful Walled Garden here at Cressing Temple exploring the techniques in action and recording inspiration for your own garden.
No design, gardening or drawing knowledge is required.

What to expect from the garden design workshop
The day will start at 11am and finish by 4pm and will be taught by expert garden designer Karen Chamberlain, who will help you take a fresh look at your garden.
Drawing on over a decade’s worth of knowledge in creating gardens of all shapes and sizes, Karen will help you take a fresh look at your garden. She will spend the morning exploring some very simple techniques used by professional designers to create harmonious and interesting spaces, including a few trade secrets!  After lunch she will take you on an exclusive tour of the ‘Wall Garden’ (normally closed at this time of the year), where you will be able to observe some of the techniques learnt during the morning session and find inspiration for your own garden design. (Sensible shoes and warm clothing is advisable. And don’t forget your camera if you wish to capture ideas from the walled garden.)
There will also be time to browse in the plant centre where Karen will be on hand to answer questions and to offer you essential planting advice.

Here is what last year’s participants had to say ….“What a superb setting for a workshop! Beautiful surroundings and the staff were delightful. I really enjoyed the relaxed and informal teaching and discussions and went home with so many ideas to think over. I have sat looking at my garden armed with paper, pencil and your ideas to mull over until the weather improves and I can try out these ideas. Exciting times!”
“Please do let me know when other courses come up as I do find them so interesting. They are very relaxed and I like the way you work by looking at everyone’s problems or stumbling points – it gives everyone else the use of these ideas  as well… All-in-all a very good day… lunch and refreshments were well supplied and enjoyed.”
“I had a really enjoyable day with lots of good ideas to put in place, good course and good company.  I have already got some things in place ready to go when the weather improves!!! Well at least the snow! I am planning my long border and with the help from the workshop and my ideas are flowing.  Can’t wait”.
